DENTAL CROWNS

Restore Your Regal Smile With Dental Crown Installation in Scottsdale

A damaged tooth is not only sensitive, but it can also further deteriorate if not taken care of. Cracks and chips in the teeth can become larger when left exposed. One of the best ways to preserve them is with a dental crown fitting, which we offer in our Scottsdale clinic.

An essential part of restorative dentistry, dental crowns are tooth-shaped covers that our Scottsdale dentist Dr. Gore places over a damaged tooth. Crowns cover your tooth to restore its size and shape and improve its appearance. These dental crowns when cemented in place, will encase the portion of your tooth that lies above and at your gum line.

We recommend getting a dental crown when your teeth:

  • Require immediate protection from tooth decay
  • Are chipped or cracked
  • Are misshapen or significantly destroyed so that approximately less than 80% of the tooth remains intact in many cases.

Types of Dental Crowns You Can Get

Porcelain Dental Crowns

For natural-looking teeth, porcelain dental crowns get the job done. Pure or all-porcelain crowns give your mouth a natural, translucent look just like real teeth. You can also choose porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns for your molar region since they’re tougher and can withstand teeth grinding and chewing.

CEREC Dental Crowns

Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics or CEREC dental crowns use computer-aided design (CAD) to create a crown that fits your damaged tooth perfectly. With our Scottsdale office’s state-of-the-art facility, we use this technology to create a long-lasting, natural-looking ceramic crown for your damaged tooth.

Benefits of Dental Crowns

As one of the pillars of restorative dentistry, dental crown installation is an important part of our Scottsdale clinic’s services. With an aging population, a lot of people’s teeth are not in the best condition. But even if you’re young and in need of a crown for a chipped or decayed tooth, dental crowns provide the following benefits:

  • They restore the appearance of a healthy set of teeth. Dental crowns not only provide pain relief and damage control solutions, but they also offer cosmetic benefits.
  • They protect your teeth from further damage and decay. Once the root problem of your damaged tooth has been addressed, the application of a crown protects it from further problems.
  • They are comfortable to have and non-intrusive. Since dental crowns are molded to the shape of your teeth, they will feel normal and comfortable in your mouth.

If you’re eager to enjoy these benefits, book an appointment with your trusted Scottsdale dentist. Dr. Gore can easily bring back your GOREgeous smile with dental crowns! Call us at 480-585-6225 today.

WHAT TO EXPECT

You will be in the office for the dental crown procedure for a slightly longer appointment but you will receive the crown at the same appointment in most cases. You will have a 20-30 minute break while the intricate designing and fabrication of the crown is done. In most cases, you will receive an anesthetic to make you comfortable during your appointment. The damaged tooth structure is removed and final images of your teeth will be taken with a small video camera, in preparation for the design and fabrication of the crown from the milling machine. Once the crown is milled, the dentist will try the crown on to assure the shape and fit are perfect, the crown will then be glazed and placed in a very hot firing oven to reach the maximum hardness of the crown material. When the crown cools, the tooth is disinfected and the crown is sterilized and permanently cemented.

After the tooth cap procedure, our Scottsdale dentist will make sure your dental crown is in place.

TREATMENT AFTERCARE

Although we don’t anticipate a patient will experience pain following a crown procedure, it is not uncommon for patients to have some tenderness in the anesthetic injection sites.

In addition, some irritation in the gum tissue surrounding the crown may occur, and periodically patients may experience some cold sensitivity in the tooth. Don’t worry when this happens. Many times this can be the result of the crown needing to be slightly adjusted to gain better harmony with the opposing teeth. Remember you were likely still slightly numb when you left the office and the equilibration may need a slight tune-up once the anesthetic wears off. Some pain is normal within the first 24 hours after a crown is placed.

You can expect to return to your normal activities following your appointment. You will be cautioned about not drinking hot liquids or chewing hard or extremely sticky foods (caramel, taffy, bubble gum) until the numbness from the anesthetic is gone due to the risk you could bite your lip or pull the crown off until the cement is 100% hardened (usually within 24 hours). Patients can extend the life of their crown by practicing good oral hygiene and visiting their dentist for regular exams and cleanings.

ANTICIPATED COSTS

The total cost of a dental tooth cap will depend on the materials used and if the crown will be fabricated in the office or sent to a laboratory for fabrication. Our financial specialists can review payment options and review insurance coverage for those patients with dental benefits.

Definitely! As long as your dental crowns are fitted by an experienced dentist in an accredited practice. In addition, the materials used for the crowns themselves are non-toxic and therefore safe to be put in your mouth.

How long do dental crowns last?

On average, a well-cared-for dental crown can last between 10 and 30 years. However, it also depends on the placement of the crown in your mouth, as well as the material the crown is made of.

How long does it take to fit a dental crown?

Depending on the type of crown and the number of teeth that need it, the whole fitting might take 2 hours or split into 2 days.

How do I know if I need to replace my dental crown?

If you start feeling pain in or near the tooth where your dental crown was placed, if your crown is too old, or if your bite feels off, these may be signs that your crown needs replacing.
