Dental implants are a great option for patients who have lost a tooth or many teeth. Before dental implants were developed, a patient had less-than-ideal options to replace missing teeth such as a removable denture or a secured bridge that relied on adjacent teeth for support. Once a tooth is lost there is nothing to attach a crown or replacement tooth to in order to fill the open space. A dental implant is a procedure where an artificial root or 'anchor' is placed in the bone where the tooth was lost. This gives Dr. Gore a secure 'anchor' to attach a beautiful, natural-looking porcelain crown to. Dental implants can also be a terrific option for patients who wear dentures and haven't had teeth in many years. Several implants can be placed to secure dentures snugly into place.

What to Expect
Prior to a dental implant procedure, a thorough comprehensive evaluation will be performed to evaluate if a patient is a good candidate for a dental implant. Dr. Gore rely on the latest digital imaging software to help them evaluate the bone structure of the area of the missing tooth. A patient will have a simple, painless 3D Cone Beam scan done in the office to assist with their evaluation. This advanced technology will help them determine the size and angulation the implant will need to be for the most ideal results and if an implant is even a viable option. After the placement of the implant, the site will need to heal for a couple months. If a missing tooth is in the 'smile zone' a patient may not want go with an open space during the healing phase of treatment. In that case, a small, custom fit replacement tooth will be fabricated. This appliance is called a flipper. It fits against the inside of the teeth where it is out of sight, with a natural looking replacement tooth attached to it. This gives the illusion that there are no missing teeth while giving the implant in the tissue below it time to heal
After a dental implant is placed many patients report minimal discomfort. If there is any discomfort, an over-the-counter pain medication is recommended to relieve it. Dr. Gore will ask that their patients return for a post-operative appointment, At this appointment, a visual exam of the implant site and an x-ray will be taken to help them evaluate how the patient is healing. The implant will heal for approximately 2 months, depending on the type of implant surgery that was performed. At this 2 month follow up visit, Dr. Gore will determine if the healing around the implant is complete and ready for the new, beautiful porcelain restoration to be fabricated.
The cost of dental implants can vary widely depending on the number of teeth being replaced and the complexity of the case. Insurance usually doesn’t cover implants but if the implants are deemed medically necessary, a patient’s insurance plan might cover some of the costs.
