Laser gum contouring is popular for many people who feel that their teeth are short and covered by excessive gum tissue, which leads to a “gummy smile.” A gummy smile may have an impact on the overall smile and this may be disconcerting for many patients. Traditionally, surgery was the only way to go for many cases. However, Scottsdale dentists, Dr. Rod Gore redefines a gummy smile with gum sculpting. This is an advanced, nonsurgical solution for shaping the gums to enhance a patient’s confidence. What to Expect
Gum contouring may be performed to reveal a beautiful smile line. This approach is highly technique driven and requires the expertise of a dentist who has mastered the use of a laser. The laser emits highly targeted light energy to remove excess gum tissue, without disturbing necessary and healthy gum tissue.
When compared to traditional surgery, the benefits of gum contouring are highly advantageous, including: no surgery, no stitches, and a quicker healing time. More complex cases may require surgical sculpting, orthodontics, or maxillofacial surgery. The treatment time is not usually more than 1 hour. The gums may feel slightly uncomfortable following the procedure, but this can be managed with pain-relieving medications. The results of gum contouring are immediate and long-lasting.
Signified by excessive gums and shortened teeth, a gummy smile may be visible following improper tooth eruption, upper lip elevation due to hyperactivity, improper jaw bone development, or simply an unknown cause. When the diagnostic results demonstrate that you would benefit from dental treatment, your dentist will tailor a specific treatment plan for you.
Treatment plans are highly individualized and may include: gum surgery to remove excess gum tissue, crown lengthening to surgically expose more tooth structure, and/or porcelain veneers to further refine your smile for a glistening appearance of enamel and properly-sized teeth. Treatment results may not only improve the appearance of your teeth, but may also improve the appearance of your face for a more youthful appearance.
